“In two weeks, the new owner is going to be here to pick up the airplane that’s the Apache that I bought a little less than a year ago flew it all over the place. Now, it’s time for its annual inspection. At the time it was the cheapest twin-engine airplane in the USA and we had a lot of fun with it. We have old parts; they need some love.”
“We got to send these off the QAA and let them work their magic like they did on the fuel pumps of the silver bullet and then we’re gonna get some Lycoming fancy mags to put in there. But we need to like get these done ASAP because that dude’s going to be here and he’s never even seen the airplane in real life yet. Fingers are crossed that he actually likes it when he gets here!”

1st Step Disassembly and inspection
Remove the drive gear that is turned by the engine
Press out the old bushings
This one needs a little more help…
My Old Magento
Old parts need cleaning before they can be inspected
This is why Airplane parts are so expensive… The level of detail is crazy!
Measuring the shaft diameter… I hope it’s still good.
This one tested good… not so with the other parts ????
It was still working after 20 years!
These both failed the inspection…
Even though it was still working after 20 years!
Testing the lightning makes it happener
Looking for microscopic defects
Yep… another failed part…
It was still working after 20 years!
Off to the scrap pile… Unlike the Elvis Jet!! Viva Las RV!
These are the only parts that tested good from 2 Magnetos!
Time to make it new again!
First step is to remove the old paint
Clean the bolt threads
Repairing & replacing any damaged bolt threads
This one had a bunch…
I don’t know what that black stuff is… (* it’s Aviation Grade Sealant- QAA)
Seriously, if you know, can you put it in the comments?
Preparing for paint
Putting tape over the gasket surface
Paint assembly
That’s cool
To remove any moisture before paint
Specialized Enamel for engine parts
Very tuff stuff!
Paint cures in a 200-degree oven
Makes it very strong!
Out with the bad parts
Ready to build back together
Over 100 pieces
1st step, new bushings are pressed in each case
The gear connect to the engine
Red thing is the ‘coil’ that creates the spark
The black and gold thing sends the spark to the spark plugs
The gear rotates and directs the spark to each cylinder
Those Gold switches open and close to time the spark
One set is for starting, the other is for normal running
Adjusting and checking the points so they open on time
Final assembly before spark testing
Each ‘click’ is a spark
About 25,000 volts!

“Bye; I love you forever and always. We have done so much work to this airplane we replaced and rebuilt both of the landing gear retraction hydraulic cylinders. We had to do the wheels and tires and bearings to replace the front axle. We replaced all new spark plugs. Wll new wiring harnesses. New wiring all new spark plugs. All new spark plug wire harnesses. The one Magneto from QAA. The other Magneto is the fancy electric one from Lycoming. I don’t even know like the list that we’ve done to this airplane just is like this long, but it’s done.
The new owner is going to be here any minute and I’m hoping he likes it. So we’ll see because of this airplane. I’m selling because I’ve got a 310 and because we just bought the Elvis Jet and I need to start refilling the bank account that has been in the negative for a minute. Uh yes, that’s fantastic.
Now that the Apache’s done, back to the normal stuff. We got to fix the GPS on this I think a power wire came off because there are too many BTUs. So that’s what we get to work on next. Fun times. That’s life day in the life of Jimmy. Basically, just airplanes broken pretty much sums it up right.
Jesse, hey, ain’t that the truth.”
