It wasn’t that long ago that the Slick magneto was considered a “throw away” magneto. When the engine reached TBO, the Slick magnetos were discarded and replaced with new.

Fast forward to 2024 and there are now four magneto (4) options available and Champion is no longer the dominant manufacturer. Hartzell Engine Tech is excited to announce the POWERUP magneto. This technologically superior magneto is now available in PMA New, Premiere Overhaul, and Value Overhaul conditions.

The table below explains the differences in work scopes allowing you to choose your work scope, warranty, and price.

PowerUp Internal Component Improvements

Improved impulse coupling hub design: Milled from a single piece of bar stock steel instead of a stacked design. Pawls are C clipped on instead of riveted. C clip prevents wear and wallowing, allowing the rivets to fail (see Champion’s)
Improved capacitor design: Internally grounded lead for improved durability. Square insulator and stud base, less prone to over-torqueing during installation
Improved coil design: Thicker insulation allows for a higher spark, thicker lamination plates on the top and bottom resists deformation during assembly
Improved breaker points: Clamp-up force applied to metal frame (instead of plastic), Improved spring eliminates point bounce (these methods reduce point drift over service life)
Improved block assembly: Arc suppression ribs added to the bridge in high tension carbon brush zone, reducing miss-fires, and geometric asymmetry prevents incorrect installation
Improved distributor gear: Distributor gear made from Monel for superior arc erosion resistance, Electrode is heat staked to shaft and hub for mechanical stability
